Research Areas

This mentor can support projects in cardiovascular biology, musculoskeletal biology, exercise, neuroscience, inflammation, and stem cell biology. Their broader areas include biology, public health, physiology, and anatomy.

Background

My current research as a PhD candidate focuses on neuroimmune mechanisms underlying cardiovascular and skeletal muscle dysfunction in peripheral artery disease (PAD). My project investigates how macrophage-driven inflammation influences sensory neuron function, with a particular focus on the mechanosensitive ion channel PIEZO2 and its role in the abnormal cardiovascular response to exercise that occurs in patients with PAD.

My previous research exeperience as a Stem cell biology MS student focused on evaluating the effects of placental mTOR on beta cell mass of mice embryos. Here, I investigated how placental mTOR signaling influences fetal pancreatic development and endocrine cell composition accross multiple developmental timepoints.

My previous research experiences as a research technician in different labs have involved assessing the efficacy of nonsense-mediated suppression therapies in a porcine model of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) with a nonsense mutation, and investigating the role of Chromolaena odorata flavonoids in nephropathy.

As a result of the experiences, my skills in molecular biology techniques such as qPCR and western blotting, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry, transcriptomic analysis, image analysis, small animal disease modelling with human relevance, critical thinking, and experimental design have been significantly honed.
