Research Areas
This mentor can support projects in second language listening and reading comprehension, instructed second language acquisition, task-based language teaching, computational linguistics, and mobile-assisted language learning. Their interests are centered on linguistics and language-learning research.
Background
My research projects primarily lie in the field of second language vocabulary learning. My dissertation focused on the relationship between vocabulary knowledge (how many words a learner knows and how well they know them) and listening comprehension. I have also conducted research focused on examining the number of words a learner would need to study in order to understand various genres of spoke and written language (e.g., podcasts). I have furthermore examined how mobile technology provides unique affordances for language learning, as well as examine the extent to which use of words from academic word study lists predicted scores on speaking tasks on high stakes language proficiency tests.
